What Makes a Good Primary School Locker?

Updated: Jan 19, 2023

For decades the trusty bench and pegs system was the mainstay of storage in primary schools.

Whilst they have and always will provide an adequate solution to storage needs they do have one major downside, most of the contents end up on the floor.

Coats, book bags and rucksacks can often be seen lying all over the place soon after breaks or lesson changes.

This can not only cause a trip hazard but according to most fire services constitutes a risk to escape during a fire or similar incident.

The solution was simple, why not use supply the students with lockers like in high schools?

Locker suppliers were keen to get in on this new revenue stream offer but forgot that smaller people require a locker that they can actually use.

We recognised that there had to be a better way, so we got to work designing a locker which ticked all the boxes for primary school children.

Designing the perfect locker for primary school use presents a number of challenges, the first of which was manufacturing the right size locker for the environment, age and storage needs of the children.

This was achieved by visiting schools to listen to the needs of staff and students and measuring everything from corridors, to bags and even children.

Our focus groups told us that schools wanted bright and vibrant colour schemes and that they really wanted the lockers to become a feature of the school rather than just a piece of furniture.

It was also very clear from the start that it would never be a good idea to give a young child a key to their locker. Plus the priority was never security but a way to keep corridors tidy and organised.

With this in mind, we designed our primary school locker with a large easy to use turn handle to secure their belongings away safely.

I'm sure you'll agree it's always worth taking the time to design a product that really works in the real world rather than something that we think will work.

You can find our range of primary school lockers in more than three hundred schools across the UK and as far afield as Finland, Rome and the Seychelles.
